Project Assistant (Waterbirds)

We are looking for a Project Assistant to support with the Waterbirds Programme.

Wetlands International Europe is a leading authority on the status of waterbirds. It coordinates the International Waterbird Census and working with almost a hundred organisation in the African-Eurasian Waterbird Monitoring Partnership. It maintains the Critical Sites Network Tool and the Waterbird Populations Portal to support the implementation of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds and the Convention on Wetlands. It also supports the work of the AEWA Secretariat and Technical Committee as well as influences the implementation of the EU Birds Directive.

The intern will support with the update of the waterbird knowledge-base to support the above activities. To this end, we are looking for a student, with a background in ornithology and data management, who will contribute to the main aim of this programme by carrying out literature review, data gathering, data management and analyses.

Profile:

The Intern should have:

  • an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • knowledge of European and African ornithology
  • strong ICT skills (GIS and data management skills, in particular R and SQL)
  • capacity to work both independently and within a team
  • ability to work in an international, multi-cultural NGO environment
  • active interest in current environment and development matters.

Duration:

As soon as possible up to and including 31 December 2023, but negotiable. Extension is possible, in which case the intern and the supervisor will agree on the end date.

Internship offer:

This offer is only applicable to students. His/her educational institute should be able to provide an Internship agreement to be signed among the three parties.

Reimbursement of a maximum of 424 EUR, based on 36 hours working week. The Intern will be asked to register hours and submit a monthly expense claim.

Hours can be flexible depending on workload and need with a minimum of 3 days per week. The commitment will be discussed regularly with the supervisor.

Location:

The intern needs to reside in Belgium or the Netherlands, however remote working in these countries is possible. We have offices in Brussels, Belgium and Ede, the Netherlands.

Working relations:

Inside Wetlands International: Wetland International Europe’s team, the Technical Officer and the Biodiversity Manager.

Outside Wetlands International: Project partners, Wetlands International Europe’s members, AEWA Secretariat, Technical Committee and other key stakeholders.
