Quick scan of natural water retention measures in the Osownica and Cienka river catchments (Poland)
The Osownica and Cienka river catchments are located in central Poland, around 50 kilometres northeast of Warsaw. This desktop study provides an overview of the present situation and the potential of nature-based solutions to improve river connectivity and natural water retention in the landscape.
In the Osownica and Cienka catchments, multiple good water retention locations are already present. However, the catchments are increasingly vulnerable to climate change, especially intense summer droughts. There is room for better connectivity in the landscape to improve ecological status. This initial review of measures offers recommendations for improvement and shows the importance of implementing multiple solutions, as a variety of measures can collectively contribute to improving the natural water retention function and ecological health of a catchment as a whole.
