Protecting farmers by protecting nature
-
Peatlands
Wetlands and peatlands are vital ecosystems that provide critical services to both nature and people. When healthy, they help reduce flooding, purify and store water, and protect agriculture from climate shocks. These natural systems are key allies in building climate resilience and supporting biodiversity.
However, many of Europe’s wetlands and peatlands remain under threat due to insufficient protection. Despite their importance, current measures under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are not enough to ensure their long-term preservation.
As extreme weather events become more frequent, it is essential that Europe strengthens, not weakens, the protections for these vital ecosystems. We call on policymakers to take urgent action to safeguard, restore, and support wetlands and peatlands. Investing in these ecosystems means investing in a future where both nature and farming can thrive.
