Looking for a technical support to the 2027 waterbird population estimates
-
Vacancies
Assessment of African and European resident and locally dispersing waterbird populations.
Background
The Global Waterbird Estimates Partnership (GWEP) was established to support the regular update and delivery of Waterbird Population Estimates (WPE), including the 2027 edition (WPE2027). WPE2027 will provide updated information on waterbird population sizes, trends and 1% thresholds for use by Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands, the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), other multilateral environmental agreements, flyway partnerships, conservation practitioners and other stakeholders.
Wetlands International hosts the Waterbird Populations Portal (WPP) and is responsible for coordinating GWEP and leading the preparation of WPE2027. This includes coordinating technical inputs from regional, flyway and taxonomic experts, quality-assuring population assessments, supporting expert review, and preparing outputs for integration into WPE2027 and the WPP.
Purpose of the assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to support the delivery of WPE2027 by preparing technical assessments for approximately 261 waterbird populations that are resident or locally dispersing within Africa and Europe, identified for review under the WPE2027 prioritisation process.
The assignment will contribute to updated population size estimates, trend assessments, supporting documentation and, where applicable, proposals for changes to boundary delineations.
Activities
- Review and correct current population definitions.
- Update population size and trend assessments.
