More than 150 Indigenous Peoples, labour unions, and civil society organisations from around the world have signed a joint letter urging the UN Secretary General to take swift action toward the establishment of a High-Level Expert Advisory Group (HLEAG) on critical energy transition minerals.
The letter recognises the Secretary-General’s leadership and vision to place justice and equity at the heart of transition mineral supply chains, and builds on the momentum from COP29.
Setting up the HLEAG is a vital step toward inclusive, transparent, and accountable global governance in this space. To deliver meaningful and lasting change, the process should:
- Guarantee shared decision-making power for civil society, Indigenous Peoples, labour unions, youth, women, and local communities
- Ensure direct representation for voices from low- and middle-income mineral-producing countries
- Be transparent and supported by a clear accountability framework
