EPLO roundtable on water, peace and conflict

Published on:

On 27 October, Wetlands International Europe attended a roundtable on Water, Peace and Conflict: Exchanging Opportunities and Best Practices, organised by the European Peace Liaison Office (EPLO) in the context of the Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) policy meetings.

The overall aim of the meeting was to exchange and to gather input on how the EU should enhance the way it addresses the linkages between the climate crisis, water resources, and peace and conflict dynamics, particularly in relation to mediation and issues of governance.

Given that the geographic focus of the discussions was the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and the Horn of Africa, the Director of Wetlands International’s Eastern Africa Office, Julie Mulonga, represented Wetlands International in this meeting, which brought together 29 participants, including 16 civil society experts, 12 officials from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission, and one official from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Wetlands International’s attendance stems from the organisation’s ongoing engagement in issues of water, peace and security, as well as the promotion of conflict-sensitive policies and investments.
