Wetlands solutions for the future: learning from ALFAwetlands and REWET projects

ALFAwetlands and REWET projects – which we are part of – have joined forces to host their final conference, taking place on 17 September 2026 in Brussels, Belgium. 

At a time when Europe faces increasing environmental challenges, wetlands are emerging as essential allies in tackling climate change, halting biodiversity loss and strengthening ecosystem resilience. Over the past four years, the REWET and ALFAwetlands projects have worked to advance wetland restoration across Europe, generating knowledge, tools, and practical approaches to support climate mitigation, biodiversity recovery, and sustainable land management.

By combining field-based research, stakeholder engagement, and policy-oriented analysis, both projects have contributed to a better understanding of how wetlands can deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits when effectively restored and managed. This final joint conference will to present the key outcomes of both projects and engage with policy, research, and practice stakeholders.

The event will feature:

  • Key findings, innovations and policy insights from ALFAwetlands and REWET.
  • Discussions on the role of wetlands in achieving Europe’s climate, biodiversity and restoration goals.
  • Research highlights, practical case studies and experiences from restoration activities across Europe.
  • Opportunities to exchange ideas and network with experts and stakeholders from different sectors and countries.
