Join us in Brussels on 13 May 2026 afternoon to celebrate world fish migration day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of free-flowing rivers and migratory fish.

This year, we invite you to take part in a guided walk in Brussels along the river in Molenbeek, co-organised with the non-profit organisation Coordination Senne. Together, we will explore one of Brussels’ often overlooked waterways and rediscover the presence of rivers within the urban landscape!

If you have ever wondered where Brussels’ rivers have gone, this walk offers a unique opportunity to engage with the city’s hidden hydrology. Through on-site observations and collective discussion, participants will learn about the history of the Senne and its transformation, the challenges facing urban rivers today, and the importance of restoring ecological continuity for migratory fish species.

By reconnecting with local water systems, the event also aims to highlight global issues such as river fragmentation, biodiversity loss, and the barriers that prevent fish from completing their natural migration routes. It is an invitation to reflect on how cities can also play a role in protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems.

AGENDA:
14:00–14:15: Welcome by the guide (Martine De Vijver) at the meeting point
14:20–14:50: Explanations about the marshes and the reserve by Jean Rommes (CEBO) near the reception pavilion of the Jette marsh (a few minutes’ walk from the meeting point)
14:50–16:30: Guided walk along the Molenbeek and towards the Ganshoren marsh, following the route below

The event will be in French and Dutch.

This local initiative is part of the global World Fish Migration Day movement, which brings together communities worldwide in support of healthy, free-flowing rivers.
