Established in September 2013, Wetlands International Europe (registered in the Netherlands as Vereninging Wetlands International European Association) is the single network organisation in Europe bringing together 11 NGOs whose shared mission is to inspire and mobilise society to safeguard and restore wetlands for people and nature.  Our ambition for the period 2020-2030 is to upscale action to safeguard and restore wetlands, collaborating with multiple partners and mobilising a wide range of actors to transform whole landscapes and sectors. Our access to cutting-edge science, combined with our understanding of EU policies, the on-ground experience from our members, partners and their networks, in addition to our own global network, makes us a credible and effective advocate for improving European policies and practices.

We are a project-driven organisation, funded by several large and small donors. Our largest donor is the European Commission, which funds us through a Life NGO Operating Grant.

Overall Purpose of the Job

In this challenging new position, you are responsible for the entire financial planning & control cycle. You monitor the financial position and results and support the management in controlling the financial household. In view of the financing structure, an important tasks will be project control; contributing to the financial streamlining of projects, including supporting and advising project managers. The aim is to make optimal use of the financing options / conditions from the donor and to prevent financial risks at a project level. Knowledge of subsidy conditions, specifically those of the European Commission, is important. Certain activities are carried out by the Wetlands International Global Office based in Ede, the Netherlands. These include: personnel and salary administration, processing invoices and bank statements, checking and preparing payments.

• Full-time job 36 hours (option of 24 – 32 hours per week also available).
• Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
• Contract duration: Until end of 2024 with possibility of renewal if funds are available.
• Location: The selected applicant will have to be based in the Netherlands or Belgium. Only candidates willing to relocate or with work permit in these countries will be eligible.

Responsibilities and tasks

Financial Control

  • Preparing budgets and forecasts.
  • Preparing the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Preparing the annual accounts, including the audit file.
  • Monitoring financial flows within the organisation and preparing liquidity forecasts.
  • Optimising and further improving financial processes.
  • Providing solicited and unsolicited advice on various topics that may have a financial impact on the organisation.

Project Control

  • Generating financial project reporting in cooperation with project managers in agreement with reported project performance.
  • Monitoring financial flows within projects.
  • Preparing timely, complete and accurate project reporting to donors and, when applicable, prepare project related audit files according to requirements and deadlines.
  • Preparing in cooperation with Project Managers, project budget forecasts.
  • Identifying proactively (potential) financial bottlenecks and risks within projects and takes appropriate action.
  • Communicating and monitoring required internal and external (grant-) regulations and conditions.

Working relations

INSIDE Wetlands International: The Finance officer will work under the supervision of the European Programme Manager. S/He will also work closely with the Project officer, Project Assistant, and Project Managers. Coordination with Wetlands International Global team will be also needed.

OUTSIDE Wetlands International: Members and partner organizations for contractual purposes, contractors and auditors.

Profile

The successful candidate is an experienced and all round Finance Controller who is able to keep an overview in hectic surroundings. (S)he is a strong personality with good communication skills and team consciousness, is open minded and able to set the right priorities. The ideal candidate will have strong creative and problemsolving skills and an ability to engage and facilitate others in systems usage. (S)he will have an understanding of NGO and/or Corporate financial processes and systems and in particular complex project accounting. The candidate should also have an interest in international conservation and sustainable development.

Essential education and experience

  • Recognised professional accounting qualification: 5+ years of relevant experience in an accounting position.
  • Knowledge of and experience in supporting and completing the various phases of grant processes (from application to reporting).
  • Knowledge of European Commission funded projects.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and fluent in English and knowledge of Dutch financial language .
  • Experience of project accounting on multi-annual, multi-site, multi-partner projects.
