On 3 September 2023, heavy rains caused huge floods and damage in the area of Toledo, Spain. One of the most severely impacted areas was in a tributary of the Tajo River, the Arroyo de Ramabujas catchment. This report examines the potential for implementing nature-based solutions to enhance flood resilience and water retention in this catchment.

The report is based on site visits, GIS and satellite image analysis and meteorological data, and is a follow up to the initial Quick Scan published in February 2024. It concludes that there are many possibilities to for nature-based flood protection using Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) and “natural sponges” to slow the flow of water within the landscape of the Ramabujas catchment. These measures can help increase water resilience in the area by reducing the exposure of catchment to both flooding and water scarcity.
