NGOs and water suppliers urge not to revise the Water Framework Directive

Imagine a Europe where rivers run clean and everyone has access to safe water. That’s what the Water Framework Directive has been helping deliver for decades. But the European Commission’s recent plan to revise it risks slowing this progress just as climate events and pollution are becoming big threats.

Together with civil society organisations and water suppliers, we are urging the European Commission to refrain from reopening or amending the Water Framework Directive (WFD). In the letter we state that such revision will almost certainly result in its weakening, whereas the focus should be on accelerating the WFD implementation and enforcement, as indicated in the Water Resilience Strategy, announced last year.
