Transparency and accountability towards our stakeholders belong to our core values; this includes actively seeking feedback on our performance. Annually, we inform our stakeholders regarding the state of our organisation – the results we achieved as well as the annual accounts. Our 2025 annual report – downloadable below – provides an overview of our main activities, impact and budget of last year.

In 2025, we operated in a significantly shifting EU political landscape, where environmental ambition increasingly came under pressure. Following the European elections of 2024, the agenda moved towards simplification and competitiveness, often at the expense of environmental safeguards. A series of regulatory revisions and “simplification packages” sought to reopen or weaken existing frameworks, including elements of water, agriculture, and climate legislation. This created a challenging environment for wetlands, as protections risked being diluted and long-standing commitments questioned. At the same time, this context reinforced the need for strong, coordinated action from civil society, whose role and legitimacy were increasingly under pressure. We worked closely with our members and partners across the NGO community to respond to these developments, strengthening alliances and ensuring that the role of wetlands remained visible and grounded in science and policy evidence.

Against this backdrop, we reinforced our role as a leading voice for wetlands within the EU policy landscape, ensuring that these ecosystems are recognised as essential infrastructure for climate resilience, biodiversity recovery, and water security. We focused on defending existing environmental safeguards, shaping new legislation, and strengthening the integration of wetlands across key EU policy frameworks.
