Impact of commodity production on wetlands

Published on:

Major soft commodities (e.g., palm oil, soy, timber, cattle, rubber, cocoa, coffee) are driving the largest amount of wetland conversion and degradation globally.  EU approved a law to combat deforestation and forest degradation linked to global supply chains, but wetlands and other natural ecosystems are excluded.

Major investments are ongoing through the Global Gateway strategy. We aim at minimizing the impact of wetlands of investments on infrastructure and commodities production.

We support our office working in the Latin America and the Caribbean, working together to achieve the Corredor Azul Programme, which aims at connecting people, nature and economies along the Parana-Paraguay river system.
