Our response to Commission call for evidence on EU rules to certify carbon removals
Published on:
Wetlands International Europe and Rewilding Europe have responded to the European Commission call for evidence and public consultation on EU rules on certifying carbon removals.
The European Commission opened a public consultation and call for evidence to gather views on the planned proposal on a Regulation on Carbon Certification Removals. Responses will feed into the impact assessment accompanying the proposal.
We welcome the Commission’s proposal to establish a certification framework for carbon removals. The proposed legislation must include the right incentives to make this land-use choice economically attractive for wetland and peatland owners and managers.
Key messages from our response:
- Wetlands and peatlands already store huge amounts of carbon, and can start removing carbon again with appropriate restoration and sustainable use measures, at scale
- This can be done with the right incentives to make this land-use choice economically attractive for wetland and peatland owners and managers.
- Wetland and peatland restoration, through rewetting and sustainable use, is tried and tested and has been shown to be cost-effective across Europe.
