Wetlands International Europe is one of 38 signatories calling for increased ambition to achieve the goal of healthy soils in the EU.

The European Commission announced its proposal for a Soil Monitoring Law on 5 July. However, in its current form it does not include enough ambition to achieve the goal of healthy soils in the EU by 2050. To address these shortcomings, the 38 signatories of this joint statement call on the European Parliament and Council to improve the proposal by ensuring a Soil Law includes the following:

  • A strengthening of the overarching objective
  • Legally binding targets
  • Focused monitoring on soil biology and land users
  • Effective governance with mandatory plans
  • Soil pollution prevention and cleaning up
  • Binding provisions on land take (area of land ‘taken’ by infrastructure)
  • Implementation of the polluters pays principle
  • Mobilisation of necessary financial resources
