Quick Scan of Natural Water Retention Measures for tributaries of Rio Tajo, Spain

Published on:

On 3 September 2023, heavy rains caused huge floods and damage in the area of Toledo, Spain. This desktop study provides an overview of the present land use situation in four tributaries of the Tajo river near Toledo, and a Quickscan of the potential for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) such as Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) and the use of “natural sponges” to delay the flow of water in tributaries.

Within the landscape, there are many possibilities to increase nature-based flood resilience in the four analysed catchments. This study offers initial recommendations for areas to be further investigated.
