Survey on European consumers’ knowledge of raw materials in everyday devices and electromobility

Every time you drive an electric vehicle, use your smartphone or an electronic device, such as a vacuum cleaner, you’re relying on lithium — a critical raw material that powers our modern lives. This consumer survey will help us to better understand what European consumers like know and how much they care about the origins of these raw materials, in order to effectively advocate for sustainable consumption choices. Take our survey here.

Through the project called Saving High Andean wetlands for people and nature, we identified many pressures – including unrestricted livestock grazing, effects from the climate change, and pollution from past and ongoing extensive mining activity – that are affecting such fragile ecosystems, in particular Salinas Grandes-Guayatayoc Lagoon and Altiplano of Catamarca in Argentina.

Among these pressures, the detrimental impact of lithium extraction on the High Andean wetland systems, in the so-called Lithium triangle, results in severe environmental degradation, water pollution and consumption, biodiversity loss and huge social impacts.

To support advocacy and more sustainable consumer choices towards the European Union, we need to better understand what people know and how much they care about the origins of these raw materials.

That’s where you come in.

Take our survey: what do you know about raw materials?

We want to hear from you!

If you are based in Europe drive an electric vehicle, or use an electronic device containing lithium, this survey is for you. It takes just 10 minutes and is completely anonymous in multiple languages (EN, FR, SP, IT, NL)

Why it matters?

This survey aims to assess European consumers’ awareness of the environmental and social impacts of critical raw materials, with a particular focus on lithium used in electronic devices. The findings will serve as a baseline for a broader awareness campaign, informing advocacy efforts and sustainable consumer choices.
