Overall purpose of the job 

The ideal candidate will support the peatlands team working on different files like the Nature Restauration Law, CAP (Common Agricultural Policy), and the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation. This could include supporting advocacy work, assisting with the organisation of events and meetings, disseminating our activities, and engaging with members of Wetlands International Europe and project partners. 

About Wetlands International European Association 

Established in September 2013, Wetlands International European Association (Wetlands International Europe) is the single network organisation in Europe bringing together European NGOs whose shared mission is to inspire and mobilise society to safeguard and restore wetlands for people and nature. Our ambition for the period 2020-2030 is to upscale action to safeguard and restore wetlands, collaborating with multiple partners and mobilising a wide range of actors to transform whole landscapes and sectors. Our access to cutting-edge science, combined with our understanding of EU policies, the on-ground experience from our members, partners and their networks, in addition to our own global network, makes us a credible and effective advocate for improving European policies and practices.

Roles and responsibilities 

The Policy Assistant will support Wetlands International Europe peatlands’ team in delivering our policy work, as well as helping in the dissemination activities planned.  

Supporting roles and responsibilities may include: 

Contributing to advocacy work 

  • Carrying out desk-based research  
  • Data collection and analysis 
  • Supporting in the elaboration of reports and policy briefings  

Networking and mobilization of members and partners  

  • Organising and supporting meetings and webinars for our networks and partners
  • Assisting in the organisation of events, webinars and meetings  

Dissemination and communication activities 

  • Drafting of communications material such as articles and social media posts 

Working relations 

INSIDE Wetlands International

Working with the Wetlands International Europe team, including colleagues from Wetlands International Global Office. Specially, the Peatlands Policy Assistant will be working closely with the Peatlands Policy Officer and Project Manager. The postholder will report to the Peatlands Policy officer. 

OUTSIDE Wetlands International

Project partners, members and other key stakeholders. 

Profile 

The candidate should have knowledge or experience relating to at least one of these fields: 

  • EU decision-making processes 
  • Nature conservation and restoration  
  • Agriculture/land-use related policies

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) with fluency in English.  

Internship Offer 

  • Only applicable to students. Their educational institute should be able to provide an Internship Agreement to be signed among the three parties. 
  • Part time or full-time (full time =36 hrs/week). 
  • Reimbursement of a maximum of 450 EUR/month, based on 36-hour per week.  
    The Intern will be asked to register hours and submit a monthly expense claim.
  • Contract duration: minimum of 6 months   
  • Location: Based in Belgium. The Intern should be willing to work from the office and attend meetings in Brussels. 
  • Start date: flexible, between January and February 2025.
