In June 2021, the AEWA Standing Committee has approved the draft report on Monitoring priorities for waterbird species and populations of AEWA written by Wetlands International, BirdLife International and Sovon, Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology for submission to the 8th meeting of the Parties that will take place in 2022.

The report emphasises the importance of the International Waterbird Census as a cost effective method for population trend estimates for the majority of the AEWA populations but also highlights the need of complementing this with other monitoring schemes for better population size estimates. The draft report can be found here.
