The European Commission’s ‘REPowerEU’ initiative, including the proposal to further amend the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), sets a higher EU renewable energy target and  designates ‘go-to areas’ for renewable energy deployment. NGOs working on rivers produced the following brief calling on policy-makers in the European Parliament and Council to exclude new or revamped hydropower projects from the ‘go-to areas’ and streamlined permitting under the amended Renewable Energy Directive due to impacts on the environment and biodiversity.
