This report presents total numbers and distribution of waterbirds in the Wadden Sea area based upon 36 simultaneous counts during 1980-1991. Some 10-12 million waterbirds are estimated to utilize the area during their annual life cycle. According to the 1% criterion of the Ramsar Convention, the area is of international importance for at least 52 geographically distinct population of 41 species. In about 18 populations, more than half the individuals utilize the Wadden Sea at some stage of their annual life cycle. In about 8 cases, almost the entire population occurs here.
